Bishop Murphy was licensed to minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on August 28, 1994, and ordained as an Elder on February 4, 1996. During this time, he also served as a mentor, male chorus member (now the Nation of Jesus), sang on the worship team and served in the Prison Ministry as a minister and administrator.
Bishop Murphy’s commitment and great passion for youth was also developed at New Birth. In November 1996, Bishop Murphy was appointed as Director of College Ministries by Bishop Eddie L. Long, Senior Pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. The College Campus Ministry at New Birth focused primarily on the Atlanta University Center, which consists of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and Spelman College. In August 2000, Bishop Murphy was appointed as New Birth’s Director of Youth Development, which oversaw the spiritual development of the church’s youth in the areas of nursery, children’s ministry, Jr. High and high school, and college. While serving as Director of Youth Development, Bishop Murphy also served as chaplain for the football teams of Southwest DeKalb and Clark Atlanta University.
In 2002, undergirding the vision of Bishop Eddie L. Long, Bishop Murphy was promoted to the division of Church Development/Church Planting. In March 2003, New Birth-Charlotte was planted by Bishop Long as the first church plant for New Birth outside the state of Georgia. Bishop Murphy was appointed to pastor the church, headquartered in Huntersville, NC, a thriving Metropolitan Charlotte suburb. New Birth-Charlotte began holding its gatherings in the North Mecklenburg High School Auditorium in Huntersville, NC. Seven hundred people attended the first worship gathering and 90 people joined on that day. Since the inception of this journey in 2003, many others have joined & partnered with the vision of New Birth-Charlotte.
On April 18, 2004, Bishop Long officially installed Bishop Terrell L. Murphy as Senior Pastor of New Birth-Charlotte. To further provide excellence in ministry, New Birth-Charlotte occupied a newly built worship center in the summer of 2009. This state of the art facility has further equipped New Birth-Charlotte to actively serve their congregation, the community, the nation and the world.
On October 16, 2009, Bishop Long, Presiding Bishop of the newly formed Global Apostolic Council (GAC), consecrated Bishop Murphy as the 2nd Presiding Bishop of the Global Apostolic Council. This cohesive organization will bring visible impact to major initiatives nationally and internationally within the Christian community. While the GAC has a global focus, it will also serve Greater Charlotte through a variety of initiatives that support the local church.
Bishop Murphy has been well pleased with the function of ministries and leadership that have been developed under the umbrella of New Birth-Charlotte. Each ministry continues to evolve into significant components of the New Birth vision. Those who have worked alongside Bishop Murphy have been the arms that undergird the progressive movement of ministry. By means of active servant leadership, Bishop Murphy desires to build a people that will serve in the Kingdom without title but with a heart turned towards the sacrifice of Christ.
Bishop Murphy, as a true apostle to the church at large, has also brought the ministry of New Birth-Charlotte outside the four walls of the church, touching several communities in the Charlotte Metro area through efforts within homeless shelters; detention centers; elementary, middle, high schools and colleges; corporations; churches; community collaborations for family services; and the clergy driven Community Banking Group. He also serves on the Father’s House Advisory Board, Long Fellows Advisory Board and the Samaritan’s Feet Board of Directors. In addition, Bishop Murphy extends his passion to build lives by serving on the boards of the United Family Services of Lake Norman, as well as Gospel Today magazine.
